Field Trip Info
HANDOUT (PDF)
We will not be meeting early at the building for this trip, because we will be taking private cars. Look on the discussion board for carpooling offers/requests. We will meet at the Walker Valley site at 9:00 am, at the Blanchard Mtn site at 12:30 pm, and at Northstar Stone at 2:00 pm. We have three places to visit, in this order, time and weather permitting:
- Walker Valley: Quartz, Calcite, Hisingerite, other minerals in basalt
- Blanchard Mountain: Stilpnomelane, Quartz, Chert in weakly metamorphosed sediments
- Northstar Stone: A wide variety of building stone types
I expect we will return around 4 pm or so.
What to bring:
- lunch (or you can stop someplace between Walker Valley and Blanchard Mtn)
- warm clothes, including a warm hat, gloves, and jacket
- sturdy shoes
- rain gear (were going rain or shine)
- a rock hammer
- eye protection no hammering without it! Safety glasses can be obtained cheaply at any number of places in town, including Home Depot
- your hand lens!
- camera, binoculars, etc., if you wish
- a positive attitude
