Equipment to bring to Summer Field Camp

This information may change somewhat as the trip approaches.

Sleeping Gear
- Sleeping bag, good to below freezing (15 °F previous years)
- Tent, strong in wind and waterproof in heavy rain (be prepared to share in some locations)
- Small tarp for under your tent or pad
- Sleeping pad
- Cord for tent or tarp
Cooking / Camping Gear
Note that you will be forming cooking groups, and these groups should plan who will bring which pieces of equipment for those items marked "share". There will not be room in the vans for everyone to bring a stove, for example.
- Cooking utensils (share)
- Stove (one-burner or share big one)
- Flashlight, headlamp is best, spare batteries
- Lantern (optional, share)
- Folding chair
Hiking Gear
- Three quarts/liters total capacity canteens/bottles - Camelbak or equivalent is recommended
- Daypack
- Equipment belt, optional but recommended
- Hiking boots, sturdy (all leather is best) and well broken-in, boot grease
- Gaiters, lightweight is fine, for weeds rather than snow
- First aid: gauze pads, band aids, tape, disinfectant, antifungal cream, ibuprofin, or aspirin, etc.
- Moleskin or other blister treatment
- Insect repellent
- Sunblock/sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum; higher is better)
- Pocket knife
- Emergency whistle
- Sun hat
- Rain parka or rain cape
- Sewing kit
Drafting Supplies (note that the department is working on a deal with the Bookstore to provide these items as a package for a reduced price - more information will be sent to you later)
- Drafting pens (Pigma Micron brand with #1 archival ink, waterproof and fadeproof):
  - one red size 0.05
  - four black size 0.005
- Sharpie drafting pens sizes fine and ultrafine
- Colerase colored pencils (24-set). If you have some already, you can just buy the others that you need to complete the set. Do not get other brands - we will use these particular colors.

    - extra eraser inserts (or a separate eraser holder)
  - OR Regular pencils #2, #3, #4, at least three each with separate good erasers
- Tracing paper 8 1/2x 11, 25 sheets, preferably heavy-duty
- Graph paper, 10 squares = 1 inch, 20-30 sheets
- Protractor/ruler, (C-thru brand model W-5), bring four or five.
- Double-stick tape, white-out, small scissors, small pencil sharpener
- Three-ring binder or other way to store papers
Geology Fieldwork Gear
- Rock Hammer, 1.5 to 2.0 lbs
- Brunton Compass, check out from Vicki, azimuth is best, make sure it works before you take it.
- Hand lens 7X or 10X
- Map board with hinged lid, make or buy mail-order
- Field notebooks, "Rite in the rain", model 340F, 350F, 540F, or 550 F, two or three
- Geology in the Field textbook by Compton (Hardcover, 1985 edition)
- Camera, reliable, in protective case, plus film or extra memory cards
Personal and Other
- Soft duffle bag for gear
- Watch/travel clock with alarm
- Shoes/sandals for evenings, days off
- Clothes for warm and cold weather but not more than necessary (use layers)
- Toothbrush etc.
- Swimsuit
- Credit card (for emergencies)
- Travelers checks for your food and incidentals, about $10 to $15 per day
- Medical insurance claim forms, if needed for your insurance, insurance phone number
- Postage stamps and letter paper
Provided by the Geology Department; do not bring these items:
- Plastic crates for food
- Five-gallon water jugs
- Ice chests to share
