Perplex & Pseudosections – 3 weeks ?        

• Content: Very basic thermodynamics, Pseudosections, How to use Perplex, a thermodynamics program        
• Reading: Handouts        
• Grading: Project Make a set of pseudosections for a standard pelite, but varying one parameter (Fe/Mg, K/Na, Al/Si, H2O/CO2, etc.) over a range.  Analyze resulting variation – describe what you would expect to see on the ground over a metamorphic field gradient.  Present results in 5 minute presentation and turn in a 1-page write-up, plus figures (100). Thermodynamics for Thermobarometry – 4 weeks?        

• Content: Mineral phase thermodynamics        
• Reading: Spear chapters 6, 7, 8, 15        
• Assignment: Calculate AlSil triple point from thermodynamic data in Excel (30)        
• Project: Implement a thermometer or barometer of your choosing in Excel (70), [Grads only: 1-page article review (30)]
