Equipment to bring to Summer Field Camp

Sleeping Gear
- Sleeping bag (good to below freezing, 15 deg C previous years)
- Tent, strong in wind and waterproof in heavy rain
- Small tarp for under your tent or pad, or to roll up in as the "human burrito" in heavy wind storms
- Sleeping pad
Cooking / Camping Gear
- Flashlight, headlamp is best, spare batteries
- Cooking utensils (share)
- Stove (one burner or share big one)
- Cord for tent/tarp
- Lantern (optional, share)
- Folding chair
- Three quarts/liters total capacity canteens/bottles - Camelbak or equivalent is recommended
Hiking Gear
- Backpack – optional; no backpack trips required, but there will be excellent opportunity
- Daypack
- Belt pack – optional but highly recommended
- Hiking boots, sturdy (all leather is best), boot grease
- Gaiters – lightweight is fine (for weeds, not snow)
- First aid: gauze pads, band aids, tape, disinfectant, antifungal cream, ibuprofin, + more
- Moleskin
- Insect repellent
- Sewing kit
- Pocket knife
- Emergency whistle
- Sunscreen
- Sun hat
- Rain parka
Geology Fieldwork Gear (note that the department is working on a deal with a local stationers to provide many of these items as a package for a reduced price - more info provided here as it becomes available)
- Rapidograph drafting pens:
  - size 00
  - size 1
  - size 2
  - black drafting ink
  - (note that although these are expensive, you may well be able to sell them to future field camp students later. With proper care, they will last a lifetime. Check eBay for good deals.)
- Colerase colored pencils (24-set). Do not get other brands - we will use these particular colors.
- Drafting stumps ("stomps") - two 1/4"- 3/8" width
- Pencils:
  - Regular pencils with erasers, #2, #3, #4; at least 3 each OR
  - Mechanical pencil (0.5 mm is best) with
    - 2H lead
    - 3H lead
    - extra eraser inserts (or a separate eraser holder)
- Tracing paper 8 1/2x 11, 25 sheets, preferably heavy-duty
- Mylar drafting film, 8 1/2 x 11, matte on one side, 8 sheets.
- Graph paper, 10 squares = 1 inch, 10 sheets
- Stereonets (2) get from Geology dept.
- Double-stick tape, white-out, small scissors, small pencil sharpener
- Ruler/straight edge
- Protractors combined with 10 scale, "C-thru" , not circle or half-circle ones, bring four
- Three-ring binder notebook with dust proof cover
- Camera, reliable, in protective case (photos of rocks are an essential part of assignments)
- Hammer, 1.5 to 2.0 lbs
- Brunton Compass, check out from Vicki, azimuth is best, make sure it works before you take it.
- Hand lens 7X or 10X
- Map board with hinged lid, make or buy mail-order: Ben Meadows p.28, 102735, $13.95
- Field notebooks, "Rite in the rain", model 340F, 350F, 540F, or 550 F, 2-3 (available from the bookstore)
- Field geology textbook by Compton
Personal / Other
- Watch/travel clock with alarm
- Filter pump, share (not needed except for optional overnight backpacking)
- Shoes/sandals
- Clothes for warm and cold weather. Don't bring more than necessary.
- Toothbrush etc.
- Swimsuit
- Musical instrument (optional, share guitar?); Playing cards, or other games(optional)
- Credit card (for emergencies)
- Travelers checks for your food and incidentals, ~ $10 - 15/day worth
- Medical insurance claim forms, if needed for your insurance
- Postage stamps—for letters and postcards
Provided by department - do not bring these items:
- Plastic crate for food (one small one is maximum)
- Five gallon water jug, sturdy, not collapsible
- Dishwashing pan (share)
