Objectives for the topic: The Deep Ocean
Reading: Chapter 18 in Tarbuck and Lutgens
Images to understand: 18.3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 13 (and note WWU Geology prof. Sue DeBari on p. 512!)
After completing this topic, the student will be able to:
- Identify the parts of the ocean basins: continental margin, deep-ocean basin, and mid-ocean ridge on a cross-sectional or map view.
- Identify the parts of a passive continental margin: shelf, slope, and rise on a cross-sectional or map view.
- Identify the parts of an active continental margin: accretionary wedge, and trench, and understand their relationship to the plate tectonic features.
- Define a turbidity current, sketch the deposits they form, and explain their relationship to the continental rise.
- Explain the formation of: barrier reefs, atolls, and lagoons.
- Identify the three main types of seafloor sediments.
- Explain why the mid-ocean rift zones are ridges.
