After completing this topic, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the origin of pillow lavas and columnar jointed lavas.
  2. Describe what kinds of volcanoes are most likely to be found at what type of tectonic plate setting (e.g. convergent plate boundary, divergent plate boundary, transform plate boundary, intraplate continental, intraplate oceanic)
  3. Explain the relationship of subduction angle (as viewed in cross section) to the map distance from the trench to the volcanoes.
  4. Explain why volcanoes form long chains in convergent and intraplate settings.
  5. List the solid products of volcanism (various volcanic rocks, ash) and the relationship of each to the chemical composition of the magma.
  6. Define and identify/sketch the following:
