Homework due Monday, 10/22
- Your text contains many triangular diagrams that represent solid solutions. Pick 3, or find others in the literature. You will plot each of these on one of the three triangular graphs on the page I handed out in class.
- For each of the three solid solutions you choose, find 4 chemical analyses of minerals that are members of the solid solution, and plot these analyses on the appropriate graph.
- The analyses will typically be in weight percents of oxides. You can either recalculate them into mineral formulas, as your book discusses on pages 94-98 or find data in the literature for which this has already been done. This will be true in many cases, particularly in more recent years.
- Be sure to cite the paper from which you got the data. Use American Mineralogist style.
- Many papers will have mineral analyses, but American Mineralogist might be a good place to begin your search. There are copies of Am Min in our classroom, which makes it easier.
- You can search geological journals using GeoRef.
